How GST Calculation Formulas Work
Depending on whether your sales price is exclusive of tax or inclusive of tax (MRP), different formulas apply:
1. GST Exclusive Formula (Add GST)
GST Amount = (Base Price × GST%) / 100
Total Invoice = Base Price + GST Amount
Used for B2B supply, consulting, software services, and wholesale billing.
2. GST Inclusive Formula (Reverse GST)
Base Taxable Value = (Total Amount × 100) / (100 + GST%)
GST Amount = Total Amount - Base Taxable Value
Used for retail goods, MRP pricing, consumer sales, and flat freelance contracts.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do you calculate GST in India?
To calculate GST for GST Exclusive pricing: GST Amount = (Base Price × GST Rate) / 100, Total Amount = Base Price + GST Amount. For GST Inclusive pricing (Reverse GST): Base Price = (Total Amount × 100) / (100 + GST Rate), GST Amount = Total Amount - Base Price.
What are the 4 main GST tax slabs in India?
India has 4 primary GST tax rates: 5% (essential goods, transport, basic food), 12% (processed foods, business services), 18% (standard rate for IT services, software, restaurants, electronics), and 28% (luxury items, automobiles, aerated beverages). 0% applies to raw foodgrains and healthcare.
What is the difference between GST Inclusive and GST Exclusive?
GST Exclusive means the price displayed does not include GST; tax will be added to the base price at checkout. GST Inclusive (MRP pricing) means tax is already included in the final retail price, and you need reverse calculation to extract the base value and tax amount.
